The column noted that Walsh has seen firsthand some of the benefits of the culture in Nosara, the Costa Rican Blue Zone community, having taught a gerontology class there. “Longevity research is a real slippery slope, with way too many researchers around the world cashing in on humanity’s fear of aging, frailty and death,” he said.

Discover quoted Caleb Finch in an article on animals with “negligible senescence” that appear to defy aging. “We know how to describe it, but we don’t know the fundamental basis that allows species that have the same kinds of cells and heart and lungs and breathe air, how they can have differences that range as short as a year, or as long as 200 years. … We know lots of things happen, but we don’t have anything like a global understanding of aging in terms of mechanisms.”
