The Secrets of Aging Are Hidden in Your Ovaries (Wired)

By In the News

Wired spoke with Bérénice Benayoun of USC Leonard Davis on how researching the ovaries may reveal more secrets of aging.

The ovaries age faster than any other organ in the body. Figuring out how to slow down that process could have health benefits for women—and men. Benayoun, is trying to genetically engineer menopause into mice so scientists can study the biological mechanisms behind it and figure out how to offset it. “Menopause is basically the single most consequential event in a woman’s life in terms of health,” says Benayoun.

Healthline, Huffpost UK, Daily Mail and MSN mentioned a study by researchers at USC Leonard Davis on breathing exercises found to reduce levels of Alzheimer’s associated peptides.

Professor Mara Mather’s Emotion & Cognition Lab found that breathing exercises – when carried out for 20 minutes twice a day, for four weeks – slashed the amount of amyloid beta, toxic proteins that have been linked to Alzheimer’s, in their blood. “Regularly practicing slow-paced breathing via HRV biofeedback may be a low-cost and low-risk way to reduce plasma amyloid beta levels and to keep them low throughout adulthood,” Professor Mather added.

Associated Press (republished widely), Fox News and Yahoo News spoke with Jennifer Ailshire of USC Leonard Davis on how environmental factors affect health and aging.

“Phoenix really is the model for what we’ll be seeing in other places, the world is changing rapidly and I fear we are not acting fast enough to teach people how harmful rising temperatures can be,” said Ailshire.
